With vulnerabilities and zero-day exploits, we’re playing a game of Whack-a-Mole that has no end in sight. It’s time we accept that, at least for the foreseeable future, this will be our daily challenge – most likely fighting the issue until our retirements. Therefore, the best course of action is to adopt your mindset and start believing that being attacked is a matter of WHEN and not IF.
So, when you design your network and security around the concept that a bad actor WILL gain access via an exploit (that PrintNightmare vulnerability has been around for 18 years!), you’ll be sure it’s built with many access layers, warning systems, and well segregated backups.
As the feature set has expanded over the last few years, immutable backups have become extremely popular. Bad performers aren’t always on the outside – unsatisfied or negligent employees can be a threat your data as well.
Many storage vendors have promoted “immutable” backups employing storage arrays on a local level. Although many of these alternatives are essentially snapshots on the same storage unit, or occasionally another unit running the same firmware/OS, you must exercise caution when using them. In that situation, a vulnerability (similar to the one for Western Digital My Book Live) or admin rights might still be used to delete the “un-erasable” backups. Because of this, having backups on several forms of storage from various manufacturers is essential. Check out NetApp’s replication technique from one SAN to another. If there is a vulnerability in the firmware or operating system, it affects your entire backup solution.
This is where you can use Object First to your advantage.
Object First is a product that exclusively works with Veeam – at least for the time being – turning the idea of onsite Veeam immutable backups into reality.
Former CEO of Veeam, Ratmir Timashev, and Andrei Baronov, the former CTO of Veeam, have developed this first-in-class, truly immutable, backup solution. The product provides on-premises immutable backups, allowing you to set a specific period of time for immutability where backups cannot be changed or deleted. No. Matter. What.
Not only will you have FULL CONTROL over your backups, but also that you will always have ACCESS to your backups because it is a physical device – which means this safe copy of data can be primary. This falls right in line with our age-old 3-2-1 rule for backups: have three copies of your data on two different types of media, one being offsite.
But wait – there’s more!
On top of all of this, it is IMPOSSIBLE for ransomware to encrypt these backups, and because this is on-premises, no internet usage is needed – making this deice incredibly SECURE. These things make Object First one of the safest ways to store your backups, but it is also affordable and incredibly easy to use. After the initial setup, this device continues to RUN ON ITS OWN, and updates are simple because there is no OS to manage.
It’s 2023 – and time to combat ransomware and other malicious actors. Put Mirazon and Object First in your arsenal and maintain control, access, and security.
Your future self will thank you.
